THE ALLIGATOR BUSINESS SOLUTION
Building a Solid Business Foundation to Make Better Business Decisions
and Gain a Competitive Advantage
What do alligators have to do with business? Actually, quite a lot in this context: Alligators know where to look, what to look for, and how to use what they find. When it comes to making better business decisions, that is all you need to know. An alligator will starve to death if it doesn’t know these three basic things. Like the alligator, if you ignore all aspects of your business, you too will starve. I hear people constantly say that they aren’t accountants, and many aren’t “numbers” people. You don’t have to be a numbers person to know where to look, what to look for, and how to use your information. You can learn. Alligators aren’t really trainable; but they, and you, can learn the basics. But what you cannot do, must not do, is ignore any aspect of your business, particularly the accounting and financial side. And you can never turn it over to your accountant and never look at it. An alligator can’t delegate hunting its prey and neither can you. As Michael Gerber states in E-Myth Revisited, “You have to know every aspect of your business.” Robert Herjevec of the TV show “Shark Tank” puts it this way; “You gotta know your numbers.” You don’t have to be an expert in every aspect of your business, but you do need to manage every aspect of your business. You have to be able to tell when things don’t look right and ask intelligent questions. The simple truth is:
- It’s hard to make good business decisions even if you have perfect information. But it is impossible to make good decisions with poor or inaccurate information or if the business isn’t grounded on a good solid foundation.
How do you get from where you are to where you want to be? How do you bridge the gap? Getting to your goals is all about making better decisions. The Alligator Business Solution is about making better business decisions by being able to use all of your information, including your financial information. However, that isn’t enough. Every business decision, financial or otherwise, has to be measured against the Foundational Fundamentals of your business. What may seem like a great financial decision will probably turn out badly if it isn’t aligned with the organization’s fundamentals. The first part of The Alligator Business Solution is devoted to teaching these fundamentals. Next we get into Marketing, Employee Hiring and Retention, Best Practices, Tools for Decision Making, and finally some Basic Accounting.
The Alligator Business Solution can help you design your future by helping you understand what is causing the results you are getting so you can develop a plan to correct the problems and reach your goals.
So, all of you non-numbers people, take heart. You can learn this stuff. It isn’t rocket science. When you know where to look, what to look for, and how to use your information, you will feel more confident in your ability to reach your business goals. As I used to tell my staff when I was CFO for D.J. Powers Company, “Accounting is Fun” (;>). They didn’t believe me at first and neither do you. To be honest, it isn’t always fun, but we always had fun working together. Building a successful business requires managing all of the business functions regardless of whether they are in your comfort zone. The Alligator Business Solution will give you the tools to be confident in those business functions which you may not be comfortable with but which are absolutely necessary for success. I look forward to taking this journey with you.
